GTA 6 Weapon Carry Limits & Storage: Vehicles and Gun Lockers

In GTA 6, you choose which guns to carry and store the rest in a vehicle or weapon locker, rather than keeping an entire arsenal concealed. Long guns such as rifles and shotguns are carried on your back or in your hands, and the way you carry them changes how pedestrians and police react.

Key Points

  • You can carry two concealed handguns and two long guns. However, you cannot stow both long guns on your back.
  • Your personal vehicle, a temporary car’s trunk and Ammu-Nation lockers serve different storage roles.
  • Holding or readying a long gun can alarm people nearby and draw a police response.

How Many Guns Can You Carry?

Handguns and long guns have different carrying rules. To carry two long guns, sling one on your back and hold the other in your free hand. You cannot put both on your back to keep your hands free.

Handguns can be carried concealed. Unlike long guns, they do not have to remain visible on your back or in your hands.

Carrying two handguns does not establish that you can fire both at once.

Long Guns

Long guns include rifles and shotguns. If you carry two, one must remain in your hand.

Only one long gun can be stowed on your back. The second cannot be hidden away.

This diagram explains carrying arrangements; it is not a recreation of the in-game loadout screen. These counts refer to guns. Inventory limits for melee weapons, throwables and tools, as well as ammunition limits, will be added once confirmed.

Where to Store & Retrieve Weapons

Keep weapons you are not carrying in a vehicle’s trunk or an Ammu-Nation locker. Distinguishing between weapons you own and weapons you currently carry makes each storage option easier to understand.

Personal Vehicle

Manage your selected loadout

Your personal vehicle carries your entire selected loadout. Retrieve weapons from the trunk and use it as a base for changing which guns you take with you.

You can also have your personal vehicle delivered. See our car theft and vehicle registration guide for how to make a car your own.

Temporary Vehicle

Stow guns you are carrying

You can put the long guns you are currently carrying into the trunk of a stolen car, even if it is not registered as your personal vehicle. However, unlike a personal vehicle, it cannot store and provide your entire selected loadout. It serves as temporary storage while you continue using that car.

A temporary vehicle does not persist in the same way as a personal vehicle. Do not treat it as permanent weapon storage.

Ammu-Nation

Retrieve guns you own

Ammu-Nation gun stores have weapon lockers. You can retrieve your guns from the lockers at each store.

These lockers provide a place to store and retrieve guns when reviewing your equipment. Some special guns are also exclusive to particular stores.

Trunk capacity, differences between vehicle types, motorcycle or bag storage, and exact controls will be added once confirmed.

How People React to Your Weapons

A visible long gun does not always cause panic. People’s reactions depend on whether it is slung on your back, held in your hand or raised ready to fire.

SlungA long gun on your back
Simply carrying one long gun on your back is less likely to cause a scene. People react differently than when you walk around holding it in your hand.
HeldWalking with a gun out
Pedestrians may become wary and move away. Not everyone immediately panics, but police who see you may give you a warning.
ReadiedReady to fire or aimed at someone
Holding a long gun in both hands ready to fire escalates the situation. Pointing it at someone may make them flee, or draw a concealed gun and fight back.

If you are only traveling through town, consider whether you need to keep a long gun in your hand. Storing guns you are not using can help avoid alarming people. Read our police and wanted level guide for how reports and pursuits work.

Passing & Dropping Weapons

Hand a Gun to Your Partner

Jason and Lucia can walk up to each other and physically pass a weapon across. You can hand a gun to your partner as well as manage your own carried equipment.

Hide a Known Weapon

Storing a weapon the police have seen, so that you no longer carry it openly, is one way to deal with heat. Dropping the weapon is another option.

Storing or dropping a weapon does not erase every clue if the police still know your outfit, appearance or other identifying details. See our heat icon meanings and clearing conditions for how to address each clue.

Do You Lose a Gun When You Drop It?

Guns you own are also managed through your personal vehicle and Ammu-Nation lockers, so dropping one does not mean losing ownership of it. Once dropped, it is no longer in your hands and ready to use.

The conditions for registering a picked-up gun as an owned weapon, and when you can retrieve it again, will be added once confirmed.

Your choice of weapons and how you carry them can also influence whether a confrontation escalates. Read about behavior and reputation in our criminal profile guide, or visit Game Systems & Basic Features for an overview.
