In GTA 6, a car’s security features determine the tools and steps needed to steal it. Older cars can be opened with a slim jim, while high-end vehicles may require a device that clones an electronic key. Even after you get inside, a tracker can reveal your location to the police.
Key points
- Scan the car first to check required tools, alarms and trackers.
- Breaking a window gets you inside, but does not guarantee you can start the car.
- Selling a stolen car or registering it as your own involves story progress and work for a vehicle fence.

What a Vehicle Scan Reveals
The WAiNK smartphone app lets you scan a car before taking it. This helps you understand both what you need to steal it and what to watch out for afterward.
What to Check in a Scan
- Locks & Security
- Lock status and security level
- Required Tools
- Slim jim or key cloner
- Alarm
- Risk of setting off an alarm
- Tracker
- Whether one is fitted and its type
- Registration Cost
- Cost to make it your personal vehicle
- Resale Value
- What a fence will pay for it
This diagram summarizes the information to check. It is not a recreation of the in-game scan screen.
A valuable car may still be impossible to start without the right tools. Decide whether you want temporary transport, a car to sell or a personal vehicle before taking it.
How to Steal a Car
The approach differs between parked cars and cars with a driver. A parked car requires you to deal with its locks and ignition security. Taking an occupied car also means dealing with the occupants’ reactions.
Parked Cars
Break a window or use a suitable tool to get inside. Check not only how to enter, but also whether you can start the car afterward.
- Breaking a window may trigger an alarm
- A suitable tool can open the car without breaking a window
- Some cars require a key cloner to start
Occupied Cars
Alongside pulling a driver out, you can demand that they leave the car. They may refuse to cooperate.
- The driver may resist or open fire
- Passengers may fight to take the car back
- The driver or witnesses may call the police
Getting inside, starting the car and escaping without police attention are separate challenges. Opening the door does not mean you have dealt with all of its security features.
Escalating the violence can affect your criminal profile, as well as draw police attention.
Tools & Unlocks
Slim Jim
A tool for unlocking car doors
A slim jim opens a car door without breaking a window. It works on older cars and other vehicles with relatively simple security.
This is a tool for opening doors. It cannot start every car.
Key Cloner
A device that copies electronic key data
A key cloner is used for cars that require an electronic key. You may be able to enter a modern or high-end car but still need this device to start it.
On supported cars, it also lets you get inside and start the engine without triggering the alarm.
You do not have every car-theft tool from the start. Story progress and jobs for a vehicle fence unlock tools and let you target more cars. A fence is a buyer who deals in stolen goods, including vehicles.
If a required tool is still locked, leave that car for later. Checking the scan first helps you avoid forcing entry and triggering an alarm when you lack the right equipment.
Exact unlock missions, tool locations, controls and minigame steps will be added once confirmed.
Alarms & Trackers
Both security systems can bring police attention, but an alarm alerts them to a theft, while a tracker reveals the car’s location.
Alarm
Forcing entry, such as breaking a window, can activate an alarm and alert the police to the theft.
- How to Deal with It
- Scan for an alarm, then choose a compatible tool or key-cloning method to enter without setting it off.
Tracker
A tracker sends a signal from the stolen car to reveal its location to the police. Entering without triggering an alarm does not disable the tracker.
- How to Deal with It
- Check the tracker type and unlock the relevant services through a vehicle fence. Until you can deal with it, abandoning the car may be necessary.
Watch Out for Advanced Trackers
Some trackers sound a warning and send your location to the police if you remain at low speed. These types do not transmit while you are driving fast, so slowing down and relaxing immediately after stealing the car can expose you.
This speed-based behavior does not necessarily apply to every tracker. Exact speed thresholds and transmission delays are unconfirmed.
Police cars also have trackers, so taking one as a getaway vehicle requires care. See our police and wanted level guide for pursuit states and search areas.
What to Do with a Stolen Car
You can use a stolen car for transport, sell it or register it as a personal vehicle. Being able to steal a car does not automatically mean you can sell it or keep it.
- Use It for Temporary Transport
- Simply driving a stolen car does not register it as a personal vehicle. Even if it remains available temporarily, it disappears when you restart the game.
- Sell It to a Fence
- Scan its value and weigh the payout against the delivery effort and tracking risk. Damage reduces its value, so keep it in good condition if you want a better price.
- Register It as a Personal Vehicle
- You need to account for registration fees, storage space and unlock requirements. You can store a car in a purchased garage until registration becomes available.
If tracker removal or registration is still locked, you may not be able to sell or own a car immediately after stealing it. Unlocking the tools and fence services first can make high-end cars a more practical target.
Leaving the car does not necessarily erase other clues, such as your clothing or appearance. Read our heat icon guide for what the police know and how to clear those clues. For an overview, visit Game Systems & Basic Features.
