GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Upgrade on PS5: Is a Credit Card Required in Japan?

Japan-specific payment note: Buying the Standard Edition at a store does not mean you can pay for the Ultimate Edition Upgrade with PlayStation Store wallet funds. The upgrade’s Japanese PlayStation Store listing says a credit card is required for titles awaiting CERO classification.

If you plan to buy the game at a store and use a prepaid PlayStation Store card only for the upgrade, check the payment rules before you buy. This article concerns the Japanese PS5 release and Japanese PlayStation Store; payment options elsewhere may differ.

How can you buy GTA 6 on PS5 in Japan?

Key point: The Japanese PlayStation Store currently requires a card for the GTA 6 purchases discussed below, including the separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade. A physical Standard Edition that contains a download code can be bought with cash at a store, but that does not make the later upgrade payable with wallet funds.

Purchase method Card PS Store wallet

Pre-order Standard Edition on the Japanese PS StoreRequiredNot accepted

Can you use a prepaid PlayStation Store card?

PlayStation Store cards add funds to your account wallet, which can normally be used for games and other content. However, PlayStation says wallet funds cannot be used for some purchases, including CERO Z titles and certain pre-order titles awaiting CERO classification. See PlayStation’s Japanese gift card guidance. Being an add-on does not automatically make the Ultimate Edition Upgrade eligible for wallet payment.

The Japanese PlayStation Store listing for the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Upgrade states that a credit card is required to purchase a title awaiting CERO classification. That warning appears on the separate upgrade listing, not only on the base game’s listing.

Both screenshots below are from the Japanese PlayStation Store. Their on-screen text is in Japanese; the English captions explain what each screen shows.

Can you upgrade a store-bought Standard Edition?

Yes. Retail copies of the Standard Edition contain a digital download code rather than a disc. Rockstar Games says that owners of a physical Standard Edition can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately after redeeming their code.

That confirms upgrade eligibility, not a card-free payment method. The Japanese PlayStation Store currently shows a card requirement for the separate upgrade.

Is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade sold at retail?

As of September 26, 2026, the upgrade was listed for ¥2,480 on the Japanese PlayStation Store. We have not confirmed a separately sold retail upgrade code. Check the retailer’s product details before assuming that a store can sell you the upgrade itself.

What if you do not have a card?

You may be able to buy the code-in-box Standard Edition with cash at a physical store. However, we have not confirmed a way to pay for the Japanese PlayStation Store’s Ultimate Edition Upgrade using wallet funds alone. The checkout shown above requires a card. The game itself and the Ultimate Edition’s bonuses are separate purchasing questions.

Frequently asked questions

Has GTA 6 been officially rated CERO Z?

As of September 26, 2026, the public Japanese PlayStation Store listing said that CERO classification was pending. The payment screen we checked used the term “CERO Z,” but that checkout message does not by itself confirm the game’s final rating.

Can I buy the Ultimate Edition without a credit card at a store?

The retail version discussed here is the Standard Edition. Rockstar says its code can be redeemed and the separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade purchased afterward. The upgrade’s Japanese PlayStation Store listing, however, carries a card-payment warning. Buying the base game with cash does not remove that requirement for the upgrade.

Could a debit card work instead of a credit card?

The checkout screen labels its card payment option “credit/debit card.” We have not completed a purchase with a debit card, so the screen label should not be taken as a guarantee that every debit card will be accepted.

Will wallet funds work for the upgrade after launch?

We have not confirmed the payment conditions after launch. The information and screenshots in this article describe the Japanese store and checkout as checked on September 26, 2026.
