In the early hours of , a user named “teapotuberhacker” suddenly uploaded more than 90 MP4 files believed to contain GTA 6 development footage to GTA Forums. The footage quickly spread across social media, but Rockstar Games issued copyright takedown requests within hours, and forum administrators removed the original post.
In July 2022, Bloomberg reported that the game would feature two protagonists, including a woman. The leaked footage identified the male character as Jason and the female character as Lucia. Vice City logos also appeared throughout the footage, strongly suggesting that GTA 6 would be set in Vice City, a fictional city modeled after Miami.
Rockstar Games Issues a Statement
The following day, Rockstar Games acknowledged in an official statement on X (formerly Twitter) that an unauthorized third party had accessed its systems and downloaded data. This confirmed that the leaked development footage was authentic.

We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.
We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations. We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.
