A report puts the PS5 Standard Edition download size for GTA 6 at 210 GB. Here’s how that compares with GTA 5, how long the download could take, and how to check your PS5 storage.

How Long Will the Download Take?

Download Time Calculator
Enter the download speed measured using the steps below.
Enter your speed and select Calculate.
How to Check Your Download Speed on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection.
- Find Connection Speed (Download) in the results.
- Enter that number in Mbps into the calculator above.
The result assumes your speed stays constant. Network congestion and server conditions can make the actual download take longer. The calculation uses 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 8 bits per byte.
| Measured speed | Estimated time |
|---|---|
| 20 Mbps | 23 hours 20 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | 9 hours 20 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | 4 hours 40 minutes |
| 200 Mbps | 2 hours 20 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | 1 hour 33 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | 56 minutes |
| 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) | 28 minutes |
Your internet plan’s advertised maximum is not necessarily the speed your PS5 receives. The PS5’s built-in Ethernet port supports up to 1 Gbps, so a faster internet plan does not make that wired port a 10 Gbps connection.
How Does GTA 6 Compare With GTA 5?
At launch, the North American PS5 version of GTA 5 was reported at 86.837 GB. The reported 210 GB GTA 6 download is about 2.4 times as large. For reference, the Japanese PS5 version showed 86.269 GB on the download screen below; sizes can differ by region.
After years of updates, the site owner’s PS5 shows GTA 5 taking up 108.7 GB for the PS5 version and 101.9 GB for the PS4 version. The reported GTA 6 download is roughly twice either figure.
| Game | Size | What is measured |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 PS5 North American version at launch | 86.837 GB | Reported download size |
| GTA 5 PS5 Japanese version at launch | 86.269 GB | Download size |
| GTA 5 PS5 version now | 108.7 GB | Installed main data, version 1.011.001 |
| GTA 5 PS4 version now | 101.9 GB | Installed main data, version 1.53 |
| GTA 6 PS5 Standard Edition | 210 GB reported | Download size; not officially confirmed |
The current GTA 5 figures are installed data; the GTA 5 launch figure and reported GTA 6 figure are download sizes. The installed comparisons are therefore approximate.

GTA 6 could grow to around 220–230 GB after updates, but this is only an estimate. Updates may replace existing data, and GTA 6 will not necessarily grow at the same rate as GTA 5.
What About Ultimate Edition and Xbox?
The Ultimate Edition could be close to the Standard Edition’s size. Whether its bonus content is already included in the base download or requires additional data is not confirmed.
The Xbox Series X|S download could also be in a similar range, but platform-specific data may cause a difference. Its actual size has not been confirmed.
Before GTA 5’s launch, a PS5 download of 86.837 GB and an Xbox figure of 94.285 GB were reported for overseas versions. The Xbox figure was also reported as GTA Online, so the contents may not be directly comparable; it cannot establish the size difference for GTA 6.
How to Check Free Space on PS5
From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings → Storage to check available space.
If you need space, select Console Storage → Games and Apps and delete games you no longer need. You can download purchased games again later from your Game Library.
Game data and saved data are managed separately. Deleting a game from the game deletion screen does not delete its saved data. See PlayStation’s storage guide for details.
When Does Preloading Start?
Rockstar says GTA 6 preloading begins on November 12, 2026, at midnight local time, ahead of its November 19 release.
For a physical code-in-a-box copy, you must receive and redeem the code before downloading. Shipping and pickup timing depends on the retailer. See Rockstar’s edition and preload FAQ.
Does the Physical Version Require a Download?
Yes. The physical edition includes a download code rather than a game disc, so you need an internet connection to download the game.
See our physical vs. digital comparison for more details.
